Towanda is located on the Susquehanna River,Towanda is a borough in Bradford County, and the county seat. It was incorporated in 1828 and was the center of the lumbering industry. Logs were floated down stream when the snow and ice melted. The community name derives from Algonquian for "burial ground" The community is in the Eastern Standard time zone. Its elevation is 738 feet and the estimated population, in 2003, was 2,946. The local median household income is about $36,000. Towanda is on the Susquehanna River French exiles settled near here in 1793, building a country mansion as a potential refuge for Marie Antoinette. After her execution, most of the founders left the area Fortunately, Towanda escaped the devastating fires that ravaged many communities in the 1800's and buildings from as early as 1812 still stand. Many are on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Well-known residents have included:Stephen Foster, composer Stephen Foster's popular "Camptown Races" was penned while Foster was visiting his brother in Towanda. At the time, a popular horse race, "five miles long" was run between Camptown and Wyalusing ( A little SE of here.)and is believed to have been the inspiration for Foster's immortal song.
